Our First Race Together: The Dolan Junior 1-Mile

“Mommy, can I run with you?” is a common phrase from Juliette when I am getting ready to go out for a run or going to a race. She’s going to be 4 next month, so the Dolan Reno 5000 series seemed like the perfect starter race to get her excited to run a race with me, and 1 mile seemed a perfect distance.

We kept the excitement going through packet pickup — and they didn’t disappoint! She was so stoked about her mustache gift box (literally, the box had a mustache handle) filled with themed gear like a pair of mustache sunglasses, mustache sucker and even a mustache sticky slap among other cute things.

We picked up our matching shirts and race bibs and set our alarm EARLY; because there are multiple race distances, they start the Junior 1-Mile first — 7 a.m., before the 5K, 10K and half marathon start at 7:30 to beat the heat.

So our alarm goes off, I go to get Juliette up and — I have a fire-breathing dragon who has replaced my sweet little girl. You know how it is mommas, some mornings you just want to put them back to bed and start the day over — and being as Juliette normally gets up between 7 and 8, I knew I was really gambling with what child I would get.

We finally get to Hidden Valley Park, and I’ll be honest… 4 was a little young to expect Juliette to run a mile, and especially with the mood she was in. But we got out there,  and although she rode on the stroller for more than half, when she said, “Momma, I want the necklace with the medal on it,” I knew I had my chance! We talked about how if she wanted it she had to earn it, and when we finally finished the mile, she ran across the finish line happily and earned her medal necklace!

While this year may have been a little young for Juliette to run the whole mile, we will definitely do the Junior 1-mile race again! Now she is motivated by seeing the other top-finishing kids up on the podium getting a trophy.

Thank you, Dolan Auto Group, for sponsoring such an awesome event for our community and promoting families getting out there and moving their bodies. That definitely makes this Mommy doc happy to see!
