Why and How to Give Locally

NBG15005_160x600_WebBanner_Charitable giving is a personal decision and for many, an important and integral part of their budget. No matter where you look, you will always find a need. Africa, Indonesia, Louisiana… but for today’s post, I encourage you to look locally, right here at home. With news coverage taking the spotlight, it’s easy for our local community to slip under the radar when it comes to charitable giving. It’s also likely local needs go unmet simply because we aren’t aware of what those needs are.

Today, March 12th, is Nevada’s Big Give. Through this initiative, NevadaGIVES encourages individuals to support a local charity that needs help. This could be giving to your favorite charity or perhaps discovering a new one you weren’t aware of. NevadaGIVES serves as a guide to giving, or as they call it, “a giving hub”, helping connect you to giving opportunities that are meaningful to you. Through Nevada’s Big Give, a 24-hour event turns one ordinary day into the extraordinary. Through giving on this particular day, not only do charities have the opportunity to obtain donations, but they can also win financial prizes that help their missions that much further. The first of NevadaGIVES’ online events took place on November 17, 2011 where more than 2,300 people donated a total of $410,673.

I help raise funds for a local non-profit based in Reno and work with many wonderful other non-profit partners. Please know that your donation – no matter the size – truly has impact and is needed. Local non-profits understand and embrace the interests and values of our community. We also have fewer layers of administration and more of your money is likely to go directly to delivering the service the non-profit was established to provide. Every amount helps; every amount given close to home strengthens and improves our community’s quality of life. In addition, your donation to a non-profit (an IRS 501 c3) may be tax deductible.

So, what calls to you? There are so many amazing causes out there. Nevada’s Big Give Razoo form allows you to search by name or keyword, learn about particular non-profits, and make your online donation (point-click-give). You can simply type “food” to receive a list of non-profits who specialize in helping provide food for those in need; alternatively, you can type in a favorite non-profit’s name directly and reach their giving page that way. The Community Foundation of Western Nevada also has a great online resource of *local* non-profits for further research (Animal Welfare, Children, Food and Shelter, Parks and Trails, and Poverty to name a few).

I implore you to please explore the missions of participating non-profits and support the cause(s) you care about. If you aren’t in a position to give, that’s OK, too. You can help by spreading the word about Nevada’s Big Give and sharing your excitement for this opportunity to give locally.  As NevadaGIVES states, “This is your day to make our home a better place.” If you do choose to participate in Nevada’s Big Give, I’m interested… what causes do you identify with?
