A Father’s Story About His Daughter’s Battle With HPV Caused Cervical Cancer

We recently received a comment on the post an anonymous mom wrote titled Why My Children Will Receive the HPV Vaccine.  The comment was from Kirk Forbes:

On June 1, 2008 our 23 year old daughter Kristen died of HPV caused cervical cancer. If she had been vaccinated for HPV, we would still have her with us and I would not be writing this response. To the author…kudos…because it takes courage to say you will protect your child from cervical, anal, and many oral cancers…. and genital warts too. To those of you in the anti-vaccine crowd…Please do not risk your child’s life because of your beliefs. You can read more about Kristen and our Kristen Forbes EVE Foundation at http://www.kristeneve.org. Our mission is to Educate & Screen and Vaccinate so we can Eradicate HPV.

Kirk Forbes….a proud Dad

Kirk’s daughter, Kristen, will be featured in an upcoming documentary about the HPV epidemic called Someone You Love.  Here is a trailer for that documentary.

Kirk Forbes was also recently featured on the Dr. Oz show, and appears in a segment called “Is the HPV Vaccine Right for Your Child?”  We at Reno Moms Blog encourage all of you to watch these videos and hear Kirk’s message.

Kirk Forbes also wrote a book about his daughter’s fight with HPV caused cervical cancer, and the management at Reno Moms Blog was so touched by his important message that we will be giving away ten copies of the Kindle version of his book, Love, Kristen.

Here is a summary about the book:Love Kristen

Love, Kristen describes the final year in the life of Kristen Forbes as she wages a courageous battle against advanced cancer.

She had just opened a new, exciting chapter in her life… fresh out of college, a promising career, and then … advanced cancer.

Kirk Forbes, Kristen’s father and author of the book documents his daughter’s uncommon bravery. She never lost her faith, her sense of humor or the will to fight. Because of her journey, he has become an activist in the fight against cervical cancer.  He wrote his daughter’s story in the hope it would inspire others to take up arms in the effort to eradicate this dread disease.

Kristen’s own journal entries provided the framework to tell her story. Walk along with Kristen and experience her final year and marvel at all the miracles that happened along the way.

If you would like to receive one of the 10 free Kindle versions of this book, please leave a comment on this blog post.  The book is available for purchase on Amazon for $.99.

In closing, we’d like to share some facts and advice from the website that Kirk created in honor of his daughter, www.kristeneve.org.

What every woman should know…

◾ Cervical cancer is highly preventable. Screening and vaccination are key.
◾ Cervical cancer is caused by a common virus. The Human papillomavirus (HPV).
◾ Every 2½ hours a woman dies from cervical cancer in the United States, despite it being the only cancer with a single-known cause – HPV – which makes it virtually 100% preventable.
◾ A Pap test looks for cell changes on the cervix that could lead to cervical cancer.
◾ Using an HPV test in conjunction with a Pap test can better identify women at risk for cancer.
◾ HPV vaccines that prevent 70% of cervical cancer are now available.
