Together We Can Solve Hunger Concert – Family Fun for a Great Cause

We’ve got less than a month before the kids are set free from school for Summer break.  If you’re like a lot of my mom friends, you’re counting down the days, anticipating the beautiful weather, and itching for the carefree spirit that Summer days seem to help many of us find…all while plotting ways to get everyone through those weeks of freedom as peacefully as possible.

Our entire family had a blast at the 2013 concert.
Our whole family had a blast at the 2013 concert.

As your calendar starts to fill up with play dates, vacation days spent at the water park, and other Summer fun, be sure to set aside the evening of Friday, June 20th for a fun-filled family night at the Robert Z Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch.  The Together We Can Solve Hunger Concert, presented by the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, is a great event for the entire family. This year’s concert features The Black Lillies from Knoxville, TN.  A great blend of new grass rhythms, an authentic brand of country, and Americana music, The Black Lillies have won multiple Independent Music Awards and have had three songs in Country Music Television’s (CMT) top 12.  They’ve also been invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry more than twenty-five times – a record for an independent group.  Check out their Youtube channel for a taste of the great performance they have in store for us. This video of them performing at the Opry is one of my personal favorites:

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is really excited to be partnering with Reno Moms Blog to give one reader the chance to win a night filled with family fun at this year’s concert with our Fun  Days of Summer Photo Contest.  It’s easy to enter.  Just grab a photo of your kids having a blast with their favorite brand of Summer fun, upload it to the photo contest on the Reno Moms Blog Facebook page, and get your friends and family to cast their vote for your photo.  The photo with the most votes will win a 4-pack of lawn tickets for the concert plus dinner for four, generously provided by the Famous Dave’s food truck who will be on site serving up some tasty BBQ throughout the evening.  (Entry and voting period is May 15-June 15.  Winner will be announced on June 16.)

An evening outside, enjoying the beautiful weather, with some tasty food and some great music is a fantastic way to wrap up the first week of Summer break.  Attending events like this one is also a perfect way to introduce your kids to supporting our community while teaching them that giving back can be FUN.  And those attending the concert will also have the opportunity to participate in raffle drawings for some pretty fantastic prizes.  Keep an eye on the Food Bank’s Facebook page for more details on what goods will be up for grabs soon.  I’m not spilling the beans on all the details just yet, but I can tell you that one of them rhymes with “Disneyland.”

So, what are you waiting for?  Head over to the Reno Moms Blog Facebook page to enter your photo for the contest now and get your friends and family members voting!  Just in case you don’t win (for the record, I’m totally rooting for you…shhhh, don’t tell anyone), you can purchase tickets online until 2pm the afternoon of the concert or at the gate the evening of.

Summer isn’t fun when you’re hungry.  Proceeds from the concert help support the Food Bank’s Kids Cafe: Summer Meals program.  In Nevada, 1 in 4 kids are food insecure. When the school year ends, their free meals don’t have to.  Through the Food Bank of Northern Nevada’s Kids Cafe: Summer Meals program, all kids can receive free lunch throughout the summer break. So they can focus on having FUN with their friends – not on hunger.

About Aramelle Wheeler

Aramelle Wheeler is midwestern girl at heart, hailing from Minnesota. Love brought Aramelle to the Reno area after she met a boy online. Nearly a decade later, she still claims to be “new to the area,” but has come to truly love the city that is now her home. She married that boy from the Internet, and together they are raising a spunky, rambunctious three-year old little boy, their miracle baby after a two year infertility fight. After more than two years as a stay-at-home-mom, Aramelle went back to work full-time shortly before her son’s third birthday. Working for a local non-profit organization, she loves her job but looks forward to a time when life can feel a little more balanced than the transition has. She often finds herself wondering whatever happened to the robot maids The Jetsons once promised us. Aramelle spends a lot of her free time with her camera in hand, clicking away snapshots of the life that’s unfolding around her, despite her son’s protests. She and her family enjoy exploring the Reno area in search of new, fun things to experience together. Aramelle loves to write and finds blogging at “One Wheeler’s World” to be a great therapeutic outlet. She also enjoys cooking, watches too much reality TV, and spends far too much time online. Follow along with her on Facebook and Twitter.
