Not only have I never been to a spa before, I’ve never had any desire to go.  Despite having several of my friends gush about how indulgent and relaxing their own experiences have been, the very thought of a day at the spa makes me cringe.  If I’m being completely honest, in my mind, a spa has always been nothing more than the perfect place to remind me of each and every one of my insecurities.  And probably to be introduced to a few new ones, too.  So when I was recently presented with an opportunity to visit Spa Atlantis, my gut reaction was to utter a loud and insistent “NO WAY!”  But, with a little prodding from Hubster and my own determination to embrace new experiences in my journey to redefine myself, I stepped completely out of my comfort zone and instead said “Yes.”

I figured I’d do something super simple.  A pedicure seemed like a safe idea.  Even this girl loves a fresh new coat of pretty polish on her toes.  When I found out that the treatment I’d actually be having was a body wrap, I had to work hard to quiet the alarms that were sounding in my head.  Wait.  They’re doing to do WHAT to my…huh?  Another reminder to myself about that whole new experiences mantra stopped me from sending the oh-so tempting “maybe you should ask someone else” e-mail.

And so I went.  In the midst of an intensely stressful week, when the idea of an hour or two to myself sounded almost as heavenly as a day at the spa seemed absurd, I strolled through the doors of Spa Atlantis.

I confess that I was more than a little nervous when I arrived.  Maybe new experiences were overrated.  I took a deep breath, reminded myself that it was just a couple hours of my time and that a nice day off work bonding with my boys waited on the other side of those couple hours, and approached the desk to check in.

20140402_113641The staff that greeted me at the desk were incredibly sweet and welcoming, and I immediately felt a bit more at ease.  After a brief tour of the locker room, I was left with a cozy robe and pair of sandals.  I wandered around the locker room for a few minutes, trying to take everything in before getting changed.  I quickly realized that I’d happily live in that locker room.  From the fluffy towels, to the fancy showers and fully stocked vanities, every amenity added to the indulgent, luxurious feel of my first impression.

I didn’t have time before my treatment was scheduled to start to explore any of the outer part of the spa, so I decided to kick off this experience with  a few minutes in the locker room’s herbal steam room.  Somehow, despite how much I detest hot, humid places and hate the smell of lavender, I found myself almost immediately obsessed with the steam room.  As I sat on the toasty warm bench, breathing in the fragrant steam, I felt the first bits of all that stress and tension start to melt away.

The treatment that I had was the Cleopatra Milk and Honey Cocoon body wrap.  The Spa Atlantis Menu describes it as: Cleopatra’s secret recipe of milk, honey and nourishing oils combine together to create an elegant and indulgent experience. You will be treated to milk and honey sugar scrub over the entire body to refine dry, dehydrated skin. Followed by a secret recipe of warm milk, honey and oils that is regenerating, nourishing and provides a protective treatment for your skin. The crowning touch is a pampering scalp and facial massage while floating weightless in the warmth of our Soft Pack® cocoon bed.

I describe it as:  Totally and completely amazing.  And not nearly as goopy as I thought it would be (because, seriously, I was a little preoccupied with that worry).  Yes, I know.  They said it better.  But I promise, it really is a glowing review.  Rosario, the gal who did my treatment, was incredible.  Somehow, she made me feel immediately comfortable.  Which was awesome, since it meant that I was able to easily surrender to the moment and enjoy this bit of pampering.

When my hour-long treatment was done, I headed back to the locker room, where I collapsed into a puddle of mush for a few minutes in the tea room.  When I managed to emerge a bit from my relaxation coma, I eyed the clock and realized that the time was zipping by.  With only a few seconds’ contemplation, I grabbed my phone from my locker and sent a text to Hubster, asking for a pass for the rest of the day.

20140402_112600That’s right.  I bailed on my guys.  Skipped out on our lunch plans, left them to fend for themselves for the rest of the afternoon.  And I didn’t waste even a second feeling guilty or apologetic about it.  I was far too busy immersing myself back in the luxury to be bothered with any of that nonsense.

I spent the next several hours soaking in all that Spa Atlantis has to offer.  I zoned out in the hot tubs in the Aqua Spa Lounge, ordered lunch by the pool.  Checked out the Brine Inhalation Therapy Room and the Laconium Relaxation Lounge.  Discovered the true awesomeness that cucumber slices and a cool rag can be and bonded with my badly neglected Kindle.    By the time I was heading home, I felt like a whole new person – less tense and stressed, re-grounded and refreshed.  A total believer in embracing new experiences.

Over the next few days, I kept inviting people to feel my hands and arms…totally out of character for me, but I was just that in awe of the magic the body wrap had worked.  And while Hubster refused to cooperate and kept declaring “Yep, it feels like skin,” several of my work buddies and girlfriends marveled with me at just how silky smooth my skin was.

But what was even more amazing to me is how long that oh-so relaxed euphoria stuck around.  And when it finally started to fade and the everyday craziness of life started to cloud my mind, there was only one logical way to handle it.  I booked another trip to the spa.  This time, I’m bringing a friend as a special treat for her upcoming birthday.  Because the only thing that I can think of that would have made my day at Spa Atlantis even better than it was is to have shared it with my bestie.  I’ve etched out the entire day, made sure her hubby knows not to expect her home much before dinner time, and am already pondering what pretty shade of polish I want to have put on my pampered toes.

For those who may not know (because I was completely clueless) any treatment at Spa Atlantis includes an entire day at the spa, with full access to all of their rooms and lounges.  And if you don’t want to have a treatment, no problem.  Tuesday-Thursday, you can purchase a spa day pass and just spend the day soaking in all of these fantastic amenities.  Combine that with the Atlantis’ locals special, which gives you 15% off  spa and salon products, services, day experiences and cardio fitness Monday-Thursday with a Nevada ID, and a day at the Spa becomes more attainable than some of us (ahem…me) may have ever thought.

About Aramelle Wheeler

Aramelle Wheeler is midwestern girl at heart, hailing from Minnesota. Love brought Aramelle to the Reno area after she met a boy online. Nearly a decade later, she still claims to be “new to the area,” but has come to truly love the city that is now her home. She married that boy from the Internet, and together they are raising a spunky, rambunctious three-year old little boy, their miracle baby after a two year infertility fight. After more than two years as a stay-at-home-mom, Aramelle went back to work full-time shortly before her son’s third birthday. Working for a local non-profit organization, she loves her job but looks forward to a time when life can feel a little more balanced than the transition has. She often finds herself wondering whatever happened to the robot maids The Jetsons once promised us. Aramelle spends a lot of her free time with her camera in hand, clicking away snapshots of the life that’s unfolding around her, despite her son’s protests. She and her family enjoy exploring the Reno area in search of new, fun things to experience together. Aramelle loves to write and finds blogging at “One Wheeler’s World” to be a great therapeutic outlet. She also enjoys cooking, watches too much reality TV, and spends far too much time online.
