One of my favorite memories from my childhood is my 11th birthday. I woke up that day to our house decked out in streamers and balloons. I had a sleepover party with some of my best friends, and we spent the night giggling away over the silliest of things. For years after, every time I would page through my mom’s photo albums, I would stop for a long while on the pictures from that day. Studying the photos of a happy little girl who was fully loving life in that moment. I spent the day feeling like the most important person in the entire world. It was magical.
Each year as Runt’s birthday starts to creep up on the calendar, I think back on that treasured memory of mine and hope to capture a small piece of that same magic for my sweet boy.
I truly love to plan his birthday parties. I spent a couple months plotting the perfect party to capture my little man, a small part of the story of who he is right now. I fight the urge to gently nudge him away from yet another train party and instead find new ways to make that same theme feel different than last year’s party. I tweak the color of green being used until Runt declares it to be perfect.
I spend evenings the week before his party decorating our house. I beam with pride as I watch my boy’s excitement grow with each banner strung, each streamer twisted into place.
And when party day comes and my house fills with some of our very favorite people, I feel the magic start to fill our home.
I fight back tears of joy as squeals of delight and the laughter of little voices carries throughout our house.
I watch my boy, surrounded by a crowd of people from different bits and pieces of our lives, open his gifts with a sparkle in his eyes
I light four candles and sing “Happy Birthday,” despite the lump in my throat.
And after everyone leaves, I collapse for a minute into my rocking chair with my boy perched in my lap. When he wraps his arms around me and declares we’ve just had “the best birthday party EVER!” I smile and think back to that magical party of my own so many years ago.
We sit quietly together for a bit, the magic of the past couple hours still filling the room. And then he declares, “…until next year. Because next year I’ll be FIVE and that will be the really best party ever!”
