Today we welcome Sarah Ortega from Nevada Breastfeeds as our guest contributor. Sarah is a Certified Lactation Educator and is in the process of becoming an IBCLC.
What if you greeted your newborn with every intention of breastfeeding and within the first three days, you were not meeting your expectation? Everything in you wanted to breastfeed, you knew the evidence, but he wasn’t breastfeeding, in fact he wasn’t eating. Oh, the sense of helplessness. And thus, 50% of women who intend to breastfeed have already given formula by hospital discharge, further reducing their chance to provide exclusive breastmilk to their newborn as intended. Breastfeeding Awareness becomes pretty significant at this point. Being alone is devastating.
The Northern Nevada Breastfeeding Coalition will be hosting their 3rd Annual Liquid Gold 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, August 3rd. This will be a great way to spend the morning with your family and raise breastfeeding awareness in our community, celebrating all the resources available.
The intent is to demonstrate that there is support. Not all women need help breastfeeding, but all women need the support of their community to build or sustain their confidence in their ability to breastfeed.
This is our second year at the University of Nevada, Reno. The route is beautiful whether you chose to run or walk. You can get your friends together and catch up while your little ones enjoy the beautiful morning. The run will start at 8:00am and the walk at 8:30am. We will register and start in front of the UNR Knowledge Center. There will be several vendors offering child-friendly activities, as well as Mellow Yellow food truck for some delicious food. Jessica, with Happy Tears Studio, will be taking pictures during the event
You can sign up for the walk or run at www.active.com. You can also keep up to date on our event Facebook page, Liquid Gold 5K. The cost is $10 to walk and $30 to run. If you get a team together it is $30 for a walking team (up to six) and $140 for a running team (up to six). We already have several teams signed up.
The morning will conclude by 10:30am and all nursing mothers are invited to participate in The Big Latch On. This is a worldwide event that pairs mothers with their babies and/or toddlers in breastfeeding together for one minute. This will be the first time Reno has hosted The Big Latch On and we are expecting a large turnout. Participating in The Big Latch On is free and you do not need to run or walk the 5K to participate. There will be a check in table in front of the UNR Knowledge Center. If you plan to attend, please check in at 10:00am.
Come out and join us for the family friendly event!
